Halifax three-piece The Orielles have released their debut single ‘Sugar Tastes Like Salt’ on Heavenly Recordings — an eight-minute-plus burst of spatial-funk that in part recalls both ESG and fellow north-west pioneers A Certain Ratio. It was produced by Marta Salogni.

Sugar Tastes Like Salt’ is premiering on DIY, who say “the track is a sprawling, unexpected thing, moving through pulsing post-punk to twitchy ESG-style brooding dance beats and back out. Lyrically, meanwhile, it references Tarantino classic Deathproof, lifting the line ‘Well, ain’t you so sweet that you make sugar taste just like salt’ to throw a darkly cheeky extra flavour into the mix.”
